This space was designed around an existing mature japanese maple with a brief of creating an intimate area for quiet, contemplation and shade from summer sun. The area was enclosed from the much larger country garden with trellis, climbers and screening plants. We created a natural stream, bridge and organic shaped paved area from locally sourced limestone and fieldstone to give the space a sense of place and permanence.

The planting has taken its cue from the mature japanese maple and followed a broadly oriental theme with the  use of additional maples, Fatsia, bamboo, ferns, hostas, forest grass and moss. The space is enlivened through the seasons by the use of bulbs such as narcissus, bluebells and lillies and  perennials such as japanese anemones, primulas and paeonies.
