Courtyard Garden - Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
To create a contemporary low maintenance, multi use family garden which maximises the small space for a family with young children .The client requested an area for entertaining / relaxing while also accommodating storage and a play area for their children. Additional privacy was required as the garden was overlooked by neighbours. The house was undergoing a full refurbishment, so the garden which was entirely paved with cobble setts needed to do justice to the smart new interior.
Small garden design
In a small garden design it is paramount that form follows function, so the design was led by the clients list of requirements, yet equally important was to create something aesthetically pleasing and interesting where the whole family would love to spend time. The finish and attention to detail were paramount in such a small space as everything is on show, so I proposed to carry through the porcelain tiles and paint colours from the kitchen/diner for the garden(exterior wood & walls paint in Spring 2017).This creates the illusion that both spaces are larger than they actually are and visually links the two. It was also important to create depth in the garden to make the 6x6m square more visually interesting and provide separate spaces for each use. This was achieved through the use of planters, plant screens and garden walls. The children's play area was central to the clients needs, so I used the vertical surface of the boundary and shed to fit in a climbing wall and monkey bars. A play house on 2 levels is also included in only 9 sq.m.
